Press Release: Day 2 Tuesday
Foyle Cup

The Hughes Insurance Foyle Cup continued today (Tues) and after the huge amount of games on Monday, Tuesday Morning was time for a break as each of the 278 teams took part in a Mayoral Welcome Parade. The Mayor of Derry & Strabane District Council City Elisha Mc Callion, walked with the parade from its starting point at the University of Ulster Campus at Magee to the Guildhall Square, accompanied by her two boys, Daithi and Fiachra , both of whom were partaking in the event with local team Don Bosos FC. It was a most colourful spectacle as over 4000 kids, in many bright track suited colours happily and joyfully parading throughout the city to Guildhall Square for the Official welcome.

In welcoming the players, coaches and parents to the city, The Mayor expressed her delight that the Hughes Insurance Foyle Cup was welcoming its biggest ever entry of 278 teams, all of whom were most welcome to the area. “ Not only is the Hughes Insurance Foyle Cup good in terms of fact it was developing undoubted football skills in young players, encouraging kids to follow a healthy lifestyle but in its own way was very much contributing to building good relations as kids of all colours, creeds, religion happily parade together and play football together all week long.” She further added that the event was a huge boost for the North West area with in excess of 12,000 bed-nights booked and an economic spend in the local economy of in excess of £1,600, 000.

In wishing teams every success during the week the Mayor concluded, “ This event has been a passport into professional football for so many local kids –local players such as Darron Gibson, James Mc Clean, Paddy Mc Court, Dean Shields, Daniel Lafferty, Saul Deeney, Shane Duffy, Shane Ferguson, Shay Givens , Seamus Colman and so many more – and I know there are future international stars present today at this parade and playing in the Hughes Insurance Foyle Cup during this week.”

Matches continue on Wednesday at venues across Derry, Strabane, Limavady, Buncrana, Dungiven, Letterkenny & Moville. Follow the tournament by downloading the Foyle Cup App in the Android and Apple App stores or by visiting

The Hughes Insurance Foyle Cup is supported by by Derry City and Strabane District Council, Causeway Coast & Glens Borough Council, Department for Social Development, Tourism NI, OFM DFM, Hughes Insurance, Seagate, Inner City Trust, Brunswick Superbowl and Derry Credit Union.

Tuesday 21st – Reports by By Brendan Hagan.

It was dull and overcast in Derry for the second day of the Hughes Insurance Foyle Cup but that in no way affected the football as there were some fantastic performances. The stand out fixture on day two saw Donegal outfit Inishowen YL take on Scottish giants Celtic FC in the U14 section. There was great anticipation at Ardmore as there was a strong following for both sides. It was a tight affair in the first five minutes as both teams shared possession in the early exchanges. James Downey had a shot from distance for Inishowen but it was tipped over for a corner by Celtic keeper Ryan Mullen. The breakthrough did come shortly after that though and it was the Scottish boys who took the lead. After a foul on what seemed to be the edge of the box, a penalty was eventually given and David McKay stepped up and dispatched coolly for the Glaswegian side. Celtic had the ball in the net again two minutes later but it was ruled out for offside after Kieran McGrath tapped in at the back post. The next ten minutes were scrappy and both teams had to show grit and determination in the middle of the park. As the half went on another Celtic goal looked inevitable however and it came five minutes before the break. This time McGrath got his goal as he slid it beyond an oncoming Johnathan Toye after a clever run in behind the defence. 2-0 at the half.

Inishowen needed to come out faster and they made a real go of it in the early stages. The Donegal side piled the pressure on as they won a series of corners and free kicks in dangerous areas. The best of the chances fell to Josh Conlon but the centre half’s header could only find the arms of a thankful Mullen after an in swinging corner. Inishowen continued to press and started to win 50/50 duels in the middle of the park. Mikey Friel made a couple of breaks but couldn’t quite find the right pass in the final third. Jack McDowall kept the Celtic defence well organised and won a couple of important headers as the Hoops withstood further pressure. Inishowen were the better side in the second period but couldn’t quite find the quality up front. It ended 2-0 to the Scottish side.

The 5pm kick off in the U15 section saw local side Trojans FC take on Belfast outfit Crusaders at Oakland Park. The game got off to a bright start as there were chances at either end. Dylan Sheerin’s flicked header didn’t quite find the target for Trojans and Ross Ferguson’s volley flashed just wide at the other end. A clear cut chance presented itself soon after for Trojans. Dean Campbell seemed to do everything right but after he rounded the keeper his shot was cleared off the line by Eoin Lundy, Lundy recovering brilliantly after his mistake had originally allowed Campbell in. This seemed to shock Crusaders into life and it was their turn to have chances. Eoin Flynn and Sean Duffy both went close but John Brattin was on hand to make a couple of fine saves from close range. There was no let-up in pressure as the half came to a close, Adam Doyle had a couple of opportunities as Crusaders turned the screw but it remained goalless at the break.

The second half started better for the Trojans as they enjoyed more of the ball. As they settled in they came closer in front of goal and the Derry boys made the breakthrough to the delight of the home crowd. A shot from distance could only be parried by the keeper and Tom Mullan took full advantage from six yards to put his team into a 1-0 lead. The Belfast boys then cranked up the pressure once again as they tried to respond. Brattin however remained strong and pulled off some stunning saves to hold the lead and keep a clean sheet. The Trojans boys all worked extremely hard in the remaining minutes and held on for a deserved win and a second day cup upset.
